AKA OLD NORWEGIAN CAST ON, LONG TAIL TWISTED, ELASTIC LONG TAIL CAST ON, TWISTED LONG TAIL CAST ON, MAINE CAST ON

Incorporating an extra twist in this variation of the basic long tail cast on, making it much more elastic, while keeping the neat, sturdy edge. Extremely versatile and attractive cast on that looks great on both sides, and works for virtually any project, with any stitch pattern. Creates the first row of knitting, so you start on a wrong side row. Probably my favourite all-around cast on that works for almost any project.

It looks good on both the front and back side. It creates the first row of knitting, so you will begin on a wrong side row after casting on.

Steps:

  1. Start in the slingshot position with a slip knot or a twist
  2. Insert needle underneath both of the strands on thumb
  3. Bring needle down and into the loop on thumb
  4. Reach over and into loop on index finger from above
  5. Bring that loop through the bottom x (closest to the needle)
  6. Drop yarn off thumb and gently tighten
  7. Repeat steps 2-6 for required # of stitches

Tip: To make this cast on more stretchy, do not just simply cast on the stitches more loosely – this will result in a sloppy, uneven cast on edge that does not look very good. To make the long tail cast on more stretchy, but still keep the edge neat and even, adjust the yarn between stitches. To make it more stretchy, leave the yarn between stitches longer, and keep the distance between stitches consistent. To make it more sturdy, with less stretch, cast the stitches on very close together.
